Fruit Fly Traps

'Tis the season.....for fruit flies.  I have found online two methods of capturing those little mighty mights and I wanted to test them, side by side, to see which was the more attractive lure.

Lure #1

Is the small bowl between the over ripe bananas and strawberries.  In this bowl I poured about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and two drops of dawn dish detergent.

Lure #2

This is the mason jar with the piece of funnel paper sticking out of it.  At the bottom of this jar I added 1/2 inch of apple cider vinegar and a small slice of very ripe banana.

Which lure captured the most fruit flies?

In the early a.m. I had my nutritious vitamin-packed shake.  With my 'break-fast' energy kicking in but still rockin' my awesome pj's, I felt I needed something easy to do, therefore, I put the fruit fly lure experiment  to the test.

I left all of my fruits out on the counter with the two lures and hustled about my activities for today... washed the dishes, fed the cats, tried to organize a bit of my desk, paid some bills, a few notes to family and friends online, threw a few loads of laundry in, folded, worked on my bathroom renovation, picked up my son from an after school activity, drove across town to pick up sports paperwork from the Dr., picked up 'pizza night' pizza, went to my son's school art show and finished off the evening by watching ABCD semi-finals for family 'movie' night and then having a girls chat with my babies (which, by the way was AWESOME!).

So, on my way to bed, I checked the lures.  Both worked but Lure #2....the mason jar with the funnel captured about 3 times more fruit flies than Lure #1, even though I put my two over ripe (banana bread ripe) bananas closest to Lure # 1 and just one 'banana bread ripe' banana near Lure #2.
